Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a crime musical about a Mexican drug lord, leads the Oscars nominations this year.

Dubai: After being postponed twice due to wildfires in Los Angeles, the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were finally announced on Thursday evening by Wicked actor Bowen Yang and Bottoms star Rachel Sennott.

Jacques Audiard’s French-language crime musical Emilia Perez, centered around a Mexican drug lord, led the nominations with 13 nods. As anticipated, major blockbusters like Ariana Grande’s Wicked also dominated the list of top nominees, alongside critically acclaimed films such as The Brutalist and Anora.

Originally set for January 17, the announcement was delayed due to the natural disaster affecting LA, which also led to the cancellation of the Oscars nominees’ luncheon scheduled for February 10. However, the ceremony is still set to take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with beloved comedian Conan O’Brien hosting.

As expected, both Wicked and Emilia Perez are among this year’s leading nominees, alongside smaller yet notable films like The Brutalist and Anora.
