According to a source, Trump and the CEO of Nvidia discuss DeepSeek and AI chip exports during their discussion. Ingulf, January 31 The CEO of Nvidia (NVDA.O) and US President Donald Trump open a new tab During their discussion at the White House on Friday, Jensen Huang talked about limiting exports of AI chips and DeepSeek, the Chinese business whose AI model’s performance shocked the tech world, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Meeting Details

Although Trump didn’t go into detail on the encounter, he referred to Huang as a “gentleman.” “I am unable to predict what may occur. We talked. The meeting went well,” Trump remarked. As the government looks for further measures to prevent China from accessing advanced computing power, it plans to further limit AI chip exports this spring.

The meeting took place on Friday afternoon. In a statement, an Nvidia spokesperson stated, “We valued the chance to meet with President Trump and talk about semiconductors and AI policy.” “Jensen and the President discussed the importance of strengthening U.S. technology and AI leadership.” The meeting between the president and the CEO of the Santa Clara, California-based company that produces the most advanced artificial intelligence chips was arranged prior to DeepSeek challenging the IT sector, according to the source with knowledge of the matter.

Concerns Over China’s AI Advancements

Additionally, according to the source, the president believes that the rise of the Chinese corporation means “U.S. companies don’t have to spend a ton of money building a low-cost (AI) alternative.” Concerns about China overtaking the US in AI development are growing, which is why the summit was held. Last week, China’s DeepSeek released a free assistant that it claims utilizes less data and costs a small fraction of what American models do.

DeepSeek quickly rose to the top of Apple’s App Store in terms of downloads, raising questions about the US’s dominance in AI and causing a meltdown that depleted about $1 trillion from US tech stocks. Shares of Nvidia, a leading manufacturer of AI technology, dropped 17% at one point. Three sources with knowledge of the situation told Ingulf on Wednesday that the Trump administration is thinking of imposing regulations on Nvidia’s sales of its H20 chips, which are intended for the Chinese market.

Potential Restrictions on AI Chips

According to the sources, Trump officials are still in the early stages of discussing limiting shipments of such chips to China, although the notion has been considered since the administration of Democratic former President Joe Biden. H20 chips were created to adhere to the current U.S. restrictions on shipments to China put in place by Biden and have the ability to run AI software. More limitations on exports of Nvidia’s AI chips are also being demanded by two US congressmen. House of Representatives Select Committee on China leaders John Moolenaar, a Republican, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat, requested the action as part of a review led by the State Department and Commerce Department that Trump ordered to examine the the United States.

Export management system in light of “developments including strategic adversaries.” The Biden administration banned the H100, Nvidia’s most potent AI chip, from being sold in China in 2022. Then, for the Chinese market, Nvidia unveiled a new version, the H800, which was just below the export requirement. The H20 was released by Nvidia last year, while the H800 was restricted in 2023.
